Hapin was established in 1972 out of concern of the deteriorated human rights situation in Irian Jaya. From the start Hapins objectives were to promote the well-being of the suffering indigenous population in the area of former Dutch New Guinea and grant as much as possible financial, material and moral support. Hapin attains its objectives by raising funds for activities which will reinforce the societal, economic, social and cultural position of the indigenous West Papuan peoples. Hapin tries to obtain this by strengthening its position a stakeholder in the development of West Papua. Hapin always tries to adjust itself to the changes which makes West Papuan society ever more complex. We are optimistic and believe that ongoing democratisation will improve the position of the indigenous Papuans.
