On a trip to Bromo volcano in Java, Indonesia, we hired some of the horses that take tourists from the town across the 'Sand Sea' to the steps up the cone. We tried to roam freely, with limited success - the horses were programmed to go to the cone or the town but nowhere else. Still Maja had fun...

In March 2010, we went for a hike up Ijen volcano in Eastern Java (not far from Bali) and found all these superhuman guys lugging 100kg loads of sulphur out of the the crater. I couldn't lift a pair of baskets a single centimetre off the ground! The volcano is dangerous too, prone to nasty...

I can tick off one life ambition after diving with mantas in Raja Ampat. We saw them while diving at a cleaning station between sandbanks so visibility wasn't too good, but even so they are majestic and huge and I got to see them in the wild. Yay! See my travel blog at:...

These odd little fish were spotted while we were waiting to see mantas at a cleaning station in Raja Ampat (diving with Kri Eco resort). They are like flattened sea horses, with similar 'armour' and snouts but live in pairs on the bottom. Real cuties

The food scraps from the restaurant at Kri Eco Resort, Raja Ampat (with arguably the best diving in the world) bring in lots of fish in at high tide and even sting rays and these small (1m) sharks. Great way for the kids to see the marine life while the grown-ups were diving. See my travel blog...

This huge scar in the earth is due to hot water and steam blasting out of the ground. There are pools of boilling water, hissing holes that you don't want to trip into, yellow sulphur staining on the rocks and a strong smell of rotten eggs. Quite a thrill to wander around
