Last October 2011 Rodney Ingersoll designed and built a simple Aquaponics trial plot in the backyard using his new Koi fish pond. Since that time he has added a 1000 lt Silver Perch tank, biological filter, tested 3 different aquaponic systems to increase yield productivity and supplying the neighbours and his family with fresh organic produce on demand. This video tracks the changes and highlights the growth of his system to date. Rod makes a point to share his experiences with his children who at a young age already understand organic vegetable production, food webs and the need to live more sustainably. Our kids grab the camera at times and film each other discussing dads system in detail. Aquaponics is a sustainable, closed-loop farming system where fish waste is used to grow agriculture. Water and nutrients from the fish waste travels into a biological filter, solids are then removed and nutrient rich water flows around the backyard using gravity into a Silver Perch tank which flows into four vegetable grow beds. This means I will be able to harvest vegetables and fish and still look at my beautiful Koi Pond. This experimental aquaponic system was set up prior to travelling to Papua New Guinea where Rod will work with the local people to develop a self sufficient system. Mar 12, 2012 - Nice work Rod and his little fishy helpers. I love the ethics behind this as much as the actual building and growing. Feeding the neighbors, teaching your own fingerlings... awesome... I have tried to bring my 13yr old along the journey, but I fear it is too late already. She likes to play with the red claw anyway :) Hopefully one day in her adulthood she will remember and head down that same path.

Mar 15, 2012 - thanks for the encouragement. Kids are sponges so if we teach them now they will remember it.

Mar 28, 2012 - Awesome and great job. I have limited space but I am looking to make an Aquaponics fish pond as well, as soon as I learn the in and out, do's and don'ts of the system. Once I learn how it works I'll design it on the Comp. and video it when I build it. So by the end I should have some great CAD drawings to go with it. Thank you for your tips.
