This is an excerpt of a talk given at the White Rabbit Art Festival in Economy, NS. in August, 2011. During the festival, I constructed a Bower similar to that of the Bower Birds of Papua New Guinea. These birds are known for their elaborate mating rituals in which the males collect and display colorful objects within their nest-like structure. Females select a mate based on the objects presented in each bower. Thus, incredibly, their evolutionary fitness is dependent upon their aesthetic judgments. Within the structure that I built, I curated an exhibition of art objects created by the other artists participating in the Festival. At the culmination of the festival, I gave an Ornithological talk and guided hike through the forest. The goal of this project was to question artists' motivations, particularly my own, for making art.
