Over Easter weekend April 2003, I was invited to be interviewed for an upcoming position at Mt. Zaagham International School. A serendipitous result was being included in the schoolwide fieldtrip to the mine and BEYOND! The immediate goal for the students was to gather trash left by previous hikers (in connection to Earth Day,) but the personal benefit much greater. This is part I, taking us on the +/- hour drive from Tembagapura to the processing plant, then a ride up the cable car followed by scenes of the mine in operation. Part II will take us beyond, into the Meren Valley. [Please excuse the unsteady camera as the bus ride was very bumpy. I tried to put in transitions between scenes and get rid of the bumps with my editing program... but couldn't get it to work. Still learning.

Aug 29, 2008 - That was a lot of altitude in one day (two days if you count the drive to Tembagapura the day before.) What a view that was... I need to get back to the land of enchantment!

papuadan Says:

Aug 29, 2008 - Thanks.. ya it was amazing to get-in on this. Good timing. Counting the drive up to Tembagapura, in just two days I went from sea-level to about 12500 ft. (Was glad I didn't get sick.) Actually I may try to post the drive up... or down & make it a 3-part journey.

papuadan Says:

Aug 29, 2008 - I will and sorry for taking so long to get back to you!

hajarpamundi Says:

Jan 7, 2010 - So, americans..you took too much from papua.

simonsmatthew Says:

Apr 16, 2010 - Yes, what the greedy Americans have done to the mountains of Papua is unforgiveable.

simonsmatthew Says:

Apr 16, 2010 - Watching this almost makes me ill.

urbanlegend420 Says:

May 11, 2010 - this company has made me significant sums of cash.

simonsmatthew Says:

May 24, 2010 - I do hope you and your children enjoyed viewing this rape of one of the world,s most unique mountain ranges. Now take them to the Papuan People and let them tell you what this mine and its orgy of excess means to them and their heritage. Imagine a mine defacing Mt Rushmore and what that means to you Americans. That would be close to what this means to the Papuan people.

arkivx1 Says:

Jun 24, 2010 - @simonsmatthew Then you should get off the internet hypocrite.

arkivx1 Says:

Jun 24, 2010 - @simonsmatthew wow, you have serious mental issues, what about the governments of the island?

arkivx1 Says:

Jun 24, 2010 - @simonsmatthew Your dumb as a box of rocks, it wasn't EVIL Americans.

arkivx1 Says:

Jun 24, 2010 - @hajarpamundi Just wondering where do you get that?

simonsmatthew Says:

Jun 25, 2010 - @arkivx1 Please dispense the verbal abuse. It only distracts. But to some extent you are right. However, do not expect US based Freeport to pay sums like BP has to. Neither the Indonesian government or the Papuan Government will be repremand Moffett like Hayward has been with Obama. The Papuan People will not get 20 billion dollars compensation, including the people thrown of their land, who have seen it destroyed or have died in conflicts or environmental related incidents to the mine.

simonsmatthew Says:

Jun 25, 2010 - The crux of the matter is that this mine needs tough regulation. It can afford massive compensation for its damages with current gold prices, and it is anyway, the most profitable mine in the world. But I do not think with the endemic corruption in Indonesia or Papua that is likely to happen.

arkivx1 Says:

Jun 25, 2010 - @simonsmatthew sorry, I got carried away!

Jul 15, 2010 - I worked underground at this mine in 1980 when it was still quite new. I always thought this was an amazing piece of engineering. The ride everyday in the cable car was breathtaking, so was the ride in the bus from the town. The local natives could work at the mine if they wanted and the doctor was free for them. We could walk to the native villages and the natives were always happy to see us, but not so happy to see the Indonesians, with good reason. The mine made a huge impact on the economy.

xxxxburp Says:

Jul 15, 2010 - @simonsmatthew You are quite right, there is huge corruption in Indonesia. But it is all very well living in a warm house with running water and electricity. Why should the local natives live a subsistence type of living when they see the high standards enjoyed by Westerners. I worked at this mine and before the Americans came, a 30 year old native was an old man. Now the country has made a lot of cash and can afford schools and medical care. The natives I saw certainly didn't dislike us.
