Indonesia rocked by deadly series of quakes. On Wednesday, June 16, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake 198 kilometers off the coast of Papua province on the island of New Guinea was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks measuring as high as 6.4 on the Richter scale. Over 20 houses collapsed in Yapen District's town of Serui, leading to the sparking of more than seven fires. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Wachjono reported that two people had been found in the rubble, and searches continued for other missing people. Earlier that day, at least one life was lost and many others injured when a 5.3 magnitude quake occurred on the island of Sulawesi. District officials reported that they were providing medical assistance as well as building shelters and emergency kitchens. Our appreciation, all Indonesian government personnel and rescue teams for your assistance to the quake-stricken people. We are saddened to know of the lives lost as we pray for the smooth recuperation of the affected residents and that such distressing conditions subside with our striving for greater consideration of all beings on Earth.
