Quakes strike Indonesia and China. On Sunday, June 26 in northwest China's Qinghai Province, a 5.2-magnitude temblor rattled the remote county of Nangchen in the Tibetan autonomous prefecture of Yushu, about a year after the region had been devastated by a 7.1-magnitude quake. Tremors could be felt strongly throughout the county, and a 30-member medical team arrived at the hardest-hit villages to check on everyone's safety. That evening in Indonesia, a powerful earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck off the southeastern island of Papua, 172 kilometers north of Enarotali. There were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries for either quake, and no tsunami warning was issued. We are thankful for the swift assistance of the Chinese medical personnel and for the protection of those in the quake-shaken areas. May such distressing events become a thing of the past as humanity's greater benevolence helps ensure the stability of our ecosphere.
